Prof. Dr. Özcan Güngör was born in 1977 in Çorum, Türkiye. He graduated from Çorum Imam-Hatip High School in 1996 and from Ankara University, Faculty of Theology in 2001. He began his professional career by serving in various departments of the Presidency of Religious Affairs and later conducted academic and community-oriented studies in the United States. He has held faculty and administrative positions at Atatürk University and Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University. He currently serves as a faculty member in the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Letters, Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University.
He has coordinated numerous significant national and international projects and has appeared as a commentator on his areas of expertise in various newspapers and television programs. As a researcher, he has carried out academic work in the United States, Germany, and Hungary. He has organized international congresses (INCSOS) in several countries, including Spain, Palestine (Jerusalem), Uzbekistan (Bukhara), Romania (Târgoviște), North Macedonia (Skopje), and Türkiye (Ankara). He is presently the editor of the Journal of Analytic Divinity and the Demokrasi Platformu journal.
Prof. Dr. Güngör has authored 22 books, more than 70 national and international articles and conference papers, as well as numerous reports, analytical studies, and opinion columns. In recognition of his contributions to Turkish-Islamic thought, he received the Ibn Rushd Award in 2018 and the Cemil Meriç Sociology Award under the 2024 Türk Dünyası Science Awards.
His research interests include methodology in the social sciences, radicalization, theo-political approaches, religious groups, migration, identity, family, and values. He is proficient in English and Arabic, and is married with three children.
