Designing a "Hyperaudiovisual Analysis Model for Remakes": The Case of American and Turkish Remakes of the Korean Original TV Show Good Doctor

Remakes hold a rather limited research history under (audiovisual) translation studies. By their nature, remakes display intertextual patterns because they are majorly shaped by anterior texts. This doctoral dissertation explores such intertextual components between the single-season Korean original TV show Good Doctor [굿 닥터] (2013) and the first seasons of its American and Turkish TV remakes, respectively The Good Doctor (2017) and Mucize Doktor [A Miracle] (2019). The original production and its remakes are further examined under this study's proposed "Hyperaudiovisual Analysis Model for Remakes," which encompasses six categories of (1) preliminary information and technical features, (2) audiovisual features, (3) symbolic features, (4) cultural features, (5) theme-based terminology (if any), and (6) scene parallelism. The extracted data are assessed based on one of Gérard Genette's (1997) transtextual elements; hypertextuality. The hypertextual parallelisms and elements (such as amplification, excision, sequel, etc.) detected under the aforementioned six categories are presented with lists of examples, tables and charts. The findings of the study provide voluminous data on the hypertextual parallelisms extant in the American and Turkish remakes of the Korean original TV show. The study also identifies the American remake as the earlier production that most hypertextually influenced the Turkish version. Ultimately, this study aspires to provide an insight for future researchers to work through more improved analysis models for TV or film remake analysis which would contribute further to the discipline of (audiovisual) translation studies.
