Abstract:
The place of wall paintings in our cultural history can be dated back to approximately 65 thousand years ago. Different wall painting techniques, the materials used in their construction and the characteristics of the colours that create the image have been in constant change and development within this vast historical period. The wall paintings unearthed by the excavations of Ephesos Terrace House in Selçuk district of İzmir province contain important examples of Roman Period painting in our country that have been preserved until today. The wall paintings of Terrace House 2 are being preserved for future generations through conservation and restoration projects that have been carried out since the beginning of the excavations. The most effective conservation and restoration planning required for the sustainability of the conservation and restoration works of the Terrace House 2 wall paintings depends on the understanding of the mural construction, technical and artistic characteristics of the period; the knowledge of the conservation and restoration process carried out in the area for about 60 years, the recognition of the repair materials used in the past years, and the identification of existing conservation problems and risk factors. This study deals with the investigation of the wall paintings of the Terrace House 2 residential complex in terms of their construction technical characteristics; the research of previous studies on their conservation and restoration as well as the identification of the restoration materials used in these studies; and the determination of the current conservation condition and problems of the in situ wall paintings. The research and survey data were analysed as a whole and conservation and restoration strategies were suggested for the future conservation and restoration of the wall paintings in the residential complex of Terrace House 2.
