Özet

This paper discusses internal migration in Cyprus in the 20th century and the social effects related to it. The main objective of the study is to show how mass psychology got affected by population movements in both societies, how they were shaped in time and the outcomes of the movements. Internal migration in Cyprus in the 20th century - often regarded as "the longest century" for both communities on the island - has been one of the major factors contributing to the development of both societies. This study focuses on how the population was affected following the division of the island into two in 1975 and the way this population was rehabilitated. It also makes a financial analysis based on estimated data to determine the costs and means of rehabilitation in the case of a possibly forthcoming exchange agreement between the two communities. The present study consists of four basic parts. The first part identifies the population movements on the island between 1900 and 1950 and the number of mixed villages. The second part analyzes the effect of social conflict between 1950 and 1963 on the internal migration movement. The third part discusses the internal dynamics of social separation and the establishment of ghettos between 1963 and 1975. Finally, the fourth part explores the population exchange that took place in 1975 and studies its social, political, societal and economic effects.
