The need for tools that can enable legal translators to raise their productivity and efficiency in the course of the translation process and the quality of their translation is growing in parallel with the growing workload of legal experts in the international arena, where it is vital to attain immediate justice. It may be suggested that Translation Memories (TMs) are considered to be highly efficient in assisting legal translators, as they were originally designed for the translation of technical documents. TM systems have some strengths and weaknesses, which this paper delineates for the translation process of legal texts. Legal translation is often thought to have a repetitive nature, which makes TM an effective translation tool. It may also yield an increase in productivity and a gain in speed. However, legal conceptions specific to a culture and its law differ from those of other legal systems. It is the aim of this paper to figure out in what ways using TMs affects the legal translation process. In the first place, the characteristics of legal translation and a brief overview of TM technologies will be presented. The probable strengths and weaknesses of using TM in the course of legal translation will be discussed. The researcher will present example pieces of legal translation that were translated with and without using TMs to uncover the strengths and weaknesses of TM-based translations for legal translators. At the end of the evaluation process, new ideas on emerging translation practices using TMs may be reached in order to overcome the limitations and challenges of TMs. Suggestions for making the most of the legal translation process using TMs will also be presented.
