Özet

A review of historical processes clearly reveals that clothing has served as an important indicator in maintaining social order, from major civilizations to the smallest communities. In the Ottoman Empire, differences in dress functioned as markers distinguishing individuals and groups; they delineated authorities, social classes within the populace, and distinctions among subjects. Clothing was regarded as a significant indicator of social mobility, as evidenced by the various legal regulations enacted at different times that specified the distinctive features such as garments, headgear, and other accoutrements appropriate to individuals according to their status. The attire of palace officials in particularincluding details such as color, ornamentation, fabric, and headgear played a key role in structuring the hierarchical order. The important function attributed to clothing and the relatively closed nature of the Ottoman palace system aroused the with meticulous attention to materials, forms, colors, decorations, and headgear, not only reflect the clothing styles of the period in great detail but also clearly illustrate the social distinctions conveyed through dress. They are therefore regarded as significant historical documents preserved to the present day. One such document is the Album of Turkish Costume Paintings, dated between 1808 and 1826 and held in open access at the New York Public Library. In this study, a descriptive analysis of the clothing styles of the sultan, who stood at the head of the Ottoman palace administration, and five accompanying high-ranking officials selected from this 19th-century costume album was conducted.
