Abstract

With the term of bodylore, Katharine Young asserts that corporal designs and corporal movements vary from culture to culture. Body is a text shaped by culture and thus reflects culture. Corporal movements which are integral part of face-to-face communication also appear in instant communication systems. This article investigates emoticons or smileys' roles, functions and ways of cultural characteristics in instant communication services. Through emoticons or smileys, it has been discussed issue of universalization of gestures and mimics. Main points of this discussion are uniformization of technology and cultural responds to this situation.
