Özet

As the global climate crisis deepens, scholars increasingly consider translation not only as linguistic transfer but as an ethical and ecological practice. Eco-translation theory, as proposed by Michael Cronin, emphasizes the translator’s responsibility to foreground environmental discourse, challenge anthropocentric narratives, and preserve the ecological issues embedded in source texts. While eco-translation has primarily been explored in literary or technical contexts, its application to audiovisual translation (AVT), particularly in popular media such as television series, remains relatively underexplored. This study proposes an eco-translation analysis of the English subtitles of Magarsus, a Turkish drama series set against the rich ecological and agricultural backdrop of southern Türkiye. Magarsus currently spans two seasons of eight episodes each and remains an ongoing series. Recently made available internationally on the streaming platform MAX, the series has the potential to reach a wide global audience, increasing the significance of how its ecological narratives are translated. Magarsus revolves around the themes of land ownership, citrus agriculture, water scarcity, and the human relationship with nature, offering fertile ground for investigating how environmental narratives are rendered in translation. Using Cronin’s framework, this study will examine how the English subtitles handle ecological terminology, metaphors of nature, instances of anthropocentric framing, and expressions tied to local environmental knowledge. The analysis will involve a qualitative comparison between selected Turkish dialogues and their English subtitles, focusing on key scenes where ecological discourse is prominent. By investigating the English subtitles of Magarsus, this research aims to bridge eco-translation theory with audiovisual translation practice, highlighting the subtitler’s role as a cultural and ecological mediator. The study seeks to contribute to the growing dialogue between environmental humanities and translation studies, demonstrating how even mainstream entertainment content can carry and potentially reshape important ecological narratives in cross-cultural contexts.
