Abstract

The famous Sufi poet Kaygusuz Abdal lived from the end of the 14th century to the first part of the 15th century. After Yunus Emre, he is arguably the best exponent of Turkish Sufi literature. He produced poetry and prose that are considered early examples of Alevi-Bektashi literature. Kaygusuz Abdal addressed the Sufi knowledge and the fundamental teachings of the Alevi and Bektashi path in his writings. In this way, he also addressed the spiritual journey of humans and the spiritual attributes she/he ought to possess during his earthly existence. This study examines Kaygusuz Abdal’s poems and the concept of human in his work Saraynâme. In this context, the concept of the ideal human in Alevism and Bektashism was first emphasized. Then, the positive characteristics that a person should acquire and the negative characteristics that she/he should abandon were listed specifically in the aforementioned works of Kaygusuz Abdal and evaluated within the framework of the understanding of Sufism in Alevism and Bektashism. Thus, the main goal to be achieved on the path of Alevism and Bektashism, which qualities a perfect human being should have, has been tried to be revealed within the framework of Kaygusuz Abdal’s world of ideas.
