Both Chinese social sciences and Uyghur studies in China have neglected the Jadidist movement. This article examines the Jadidist movement. It explores how Jadidism emerged, developed and spread to the eastern regions of the Volga-Ural area and the Ottoman Empire, focusing particularly on its impact on Turkic-speaking communities. It emphasises that the movement represented a modernisation and renewal initiative for the Uyghurs and other Turkic-Islamic communities in Central Asia.
