Özet

The porters, who carry a burden for a fee, are one of the important figures of the Ottoman commercial life and they are seen in many paintings and photographs. In particular, among the works of foreign artists who visited the Ottoman country, there are depictions of tradesmen and craftsmen, including porters. Edmondo Amicis, Amedeo Preziosi, Pierre Montani, Choiseul-Gouffier, and Leonardo de Mango are a few of the foreign painters depicting porters. It is not surprising that these depictions of porters, who constituted an important group in the street life of the Ottomans, are among the paintings that aim to show Eastern life in all its aspects. It is seen that long before orientalist painters, local painters also made porter depictions to be included in albums prepared especially for Westerners. In this paper, information about Ottoman porters will be given, as well as how porters are reflected in the works of local and foreign painters. These depictions will be evaluated not only with their pictorial qualities but also in terms of their clothing and the tools and equipment they use in freight transportation since they are visual documents.
